Besides Plus one the other good thing that happened in 2011 was kenyanstar winning the KPL chairman's award for excellent coverage of the Kenya Premier league. . With the help of Martin Luther King archives, i had prepared an acceptance speech but never got to give it. I take this opportunity to share it here;

Samuel Eyinda’s Acceptance Speech on behalf of kenyanstar, on the occasion of winning the Kenya Premier League chairman’s award in Nairobi, December 07, 2011.

........................................
Hon. Paul Otuoma, the minister of sports, Mr. Sam Nyamwea, the newly elected FkF chairman, Your chairmanship, KPL chair, The KPL sponsors and representatives of various team sponsors, coaches, players, members of the fourth estate, football fans and everyone else gathered here tonight:

I’m greatly humbled to stand before you and accept the KPL chairman’s award recognizing the efforts made by kenyanstar in our little but crucial contribution towards the growth of kenyan football. I accept this award on behalf of the entire kenyanstar crew; The editorial team under Timothy assisted by Mwangi, Mulemi, Stephannie, Carray, Francis, Bwana, Kwambo, Emily and the marketing team led by Fanuel, Habiba and Belinda. I accept this award on behalf of every single individual making an effort towards bringing kenyan soccer to age. I am mindful that just a few seasons ago, kenya premier league matches could hardly raise 20 fans at the stadium. I’m mindful that not so long ago a big part of KPL players played football not as a career but as a pass time activity and no one bothered about their pay. I’m mindful that even in recent times, more often than not, our mainstream media will prioritize coverage of European leagues as opposed to our very own Kenyan league. I’m mindful that just a season ago corporate companies would consider investment in local football a waste of money. I’m mindful that in the past we have seen two parallel leagues played due to failed leadership and even this very ended season, we’ve had two parallel leagues at the second tier(nationwide).

Therefore, I must ask why this prize is awarded to a small outfit that is only driven by passion and nothing else. To an outfit that reaches only to just about 4000 kenyans with no real muscle to effect any considerable change in kenyan football; to an outfit that for lack of better words can be described as a group of passionate fans trying to make a difference in kenyan football.

After contemplation, I conclude that this award which I receive on behalf of the said outfit, kenyanstar, is a profound recognition that belief, dedication, consistency and yes, passion! is the answer to the desired growth of Kenyan football. At this point I wish to commend KPL for the excellent job they’ve done over the last few seasons of course not forgetting the role super sport has played. Sooner or later the entire kenyan football fraternity will have to realize that we have a starting point and we can only move forward.

I accept this award today with an abiding faith in Kenyan football and an audacious faith in its future. I refuse to accept despair as the final response to the ambiguities of history. I refuse to accept the idea that Kenyan football is mere flotsom and jetsom in relation to continental or world Football and that we are unable to influence the unfolding events which surround our game.

It is my wish that our players share my faith. This faith can give us courage to face the uncertainties of the future. It will give our tired feet new strength as we continue our forward stride towards being a football power house. Kenyan football must and will come of age and you(players) will be able to make a living out of it, better than it happens today. It is possible!

I stand here today as a trustee, inspired and with renewed dedication to kenyan football. I accept this award on behalf of all football fans who believe in the kenyan game. I say I come as a trustee, because in the depths of my heart I am aware that this award is much more than an honor to kenyanstar as an organization. It is recognition of every other individual who believes in kenyan football, who is dedicated and driven by passion to make the right step in the right direction every single day of their lives in a bid to make kenyan football a success story.

Thank you

S.M.E http://www.blogger.com/profile/05533086700805562987noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7421993508434247873.post-8966992046317374072011-11-29T22:27:00.001+03:002011-11-29T23:01:37.127+03:00Cleaning out the 'cobwebs'

My sincere apologies for taking forever to do this. Four weeks is a long time without a post given my welcome message. I guess Plus one is keeping me more busy than i expected But seriously that is not the frequency with which i plan to blog.

Forgetting about Laplace theorems, Frequency and amplitude modulations, Cost of energy calculations and the Fourier series, my posts as any close associate might guess will be more on sports and football in particular. Just in-case it bypassed you, my campus love and pass time activity kenyanstar is now my employer. Funny right? well i'll do a post on that at a later stage, i.e. after bringing you to speed on what up.

That said, community posts will also frequent here by virtue of football being a community activity. I also cherish a bit of success i had with the 'Student Engineer' journal as the Editor in chief and would most definitely keep track on what has been happening since i left in 2009. There must be at least seven more issues of that after my Era. Just so that you know, my passion for technical publication did not end with the 'Student Engineer', it continued here in fact even before i graduated from campus. It is a long story this that i can summarize and tell here.

I will also keep track, either on demand or at will on my previous posts such as this on reading culture, this one on Biogas plants and maybe, just maybe this one sanitary towels If not then i might let 'Plus one' handle that for me. You see most of this posts were made some two years ago in my days as a student. But having met the real world and facing the reality they remain nothing much but ideas on paper. May be it's time we tried again don't you think so?

I would be interested to know if any of my readers would like me to include any other item on my planned coverage list. Hit me up on facebook, twitter or e-mail.

Inspired by not only the desire to write and share but also 'my plus one' i find it necessary to make a comeback.
Sports could take center stage this time round but i promise like a very fare father to give every sphere of my life some equal coverage.
welcome back good people. The greater our knowledge increases, the greater our ignorance unfolds…” so says John F Kennedy in his speech we choose to go the moon. I am not yet acquainted with the scientific rational behind the correlation of knowledge and ignorance as brought out by this outstanding orator, but in the wake of the recently launched vision 2030 roadmap, it’s only prudent to subscribe to the same flight of thought in totality. If you read on I will tell you why.

Today at 5am My Singapore made alarm clock bid me good morning, I get into my Italian attire, and gladly emptied a cup of British processed coffee in a China made mug. I received a call via my Hungary made nokia phone, from a Kenyan brother working in an Indian owned paper manufacturing firm, who finds it imperative to shares with me the sad news of the demise of his Canada made Mp3 player that passed on due to unavailability of spare parts. I then take my South Africa made pen and write to you this letter, heavily quoting an American states man. It is sad, absurd and for lack of a better British phrase bizarre to note that the only Kenyan thing about me is my name, my heritage and my pitiful pride. I beg to be excused for submitting that the answers to Kenya’s development questions largely lie on the innovative capacity of our engineers. Show me an emerging economy, and I’ll show you a country with enterprising engineers. Kenya has four universities with full-fledged engineering departments yet we use cutlery made in china, electronics made in Japan, automobiles made in America…for the love God, where do the over 500 engineering graduates every year go to? For good measure, allow me to assume they put their five years of intensive training to the assembly of motor vehicle parts, procurement of electronics from oversees and only heavens know what else!

Shame on us, if we can’t come up with innovative, economic sensible & ecological friendly solutions to the technological quagmire facing this country; shame on us, if 40 years after independence we can still import basic kitchen ware like cutlery; and above all shame on us if we can proudly walk head high masquerading as engineers yet we cant design a simple machine to grind maize cobs so as to produce animal feed. Make no mistake comrades, the challenge to every student engineer today is not to make spoons and knives and export them to the economically ailing state of Zimbabwe; our challenge is to invent an eco-friendly technology of making a spoon of superior quality at the lowest possible cost, and have it compete in the international market; our greatest challenge is not to come up with a machine that can recycle used tyres, our utmost challenge is to identify that used tyres have an economic value and they need to be recycled at a sensible cost. The challenge of today’s engineers is not to see the technological vacuum arising from global warming; escalating population and inflation- It is to anticipate such a vacuum and its economic consequences; our challenge, I insist, is not to do the impossible, it is to see the invisible.

Everyday starting yesterday, in the intellectual menu of Kenya’s cream of the crop, vision 2030 has been- and shall continue being- a delicacy. As much as it may be fashionable to sing to the tune of this scholarly in-thing, the million-dollar question to all student engineers and by extension, citizens of good will is, “what is my personal contribution to the realization of this ambitious but feasible dream?” tradition reminds us that dreams only occur at night… and indeed last night that was the past 40 years, we did build castles in the air. But Henry David Thoreau tells us our work need not be lost; let’s now put foundations under them. I can’t agree more. A new day has come, it’s now time to wake up Kenya… and heed to the challenge posed by John F. Kennedy a political icon in the American democracy, said he, “ask not what your country can do for you- ask what you can do for your country.” I Rest my case.

Contributed by Dan Anthony Ongoma

S.M.E http://www.blogger.com/profile/05533086700805562987noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7421993508434247873.post-60509569624263787862010-07-13T10:36:00.002+03:002010-07-13T10:45:30.643+03:00CORRUPTION, HOW FAR HOW LONG?
The struggle to end this evil has been on like for ever. One just wonders for how long it will stay on. Sample the conversation below that I happened to witness…
Let us start by defining some variables here:-

A- city council Askari1
B. City council Askari2
X- A visiting potential investor who happens to have stayed in Tanzania for some time and perfectly speaks Swahili.
Y- Kenyan host to the visiting investor
Location: Westlands Nairobi.

Investor X stops by at his hosts office in westlands for a quick brief before they both head off for a major meeting in town. With the hurry, X does not get a parking ticket from the Nairobi City Council men. Mid way in the meeting, the security guard at the gate walks in to inform the two that Y’s car has been clamped by city council Askaris. The two emerge from their meeting and the following conversation ensues:-

Y: Habari zenu wakubwa?

B: sisi tuko sawa tu. The regional contest was a qualification stage for the national contest which will be held on26th of November 2009. Robocon Kenya is a Kenyan robotics contest organized and sponsored by the ministry of education in conjunction with JICA. The contest is aimed at encouraging Innovation and practical based learning in Kenyan technical training institutions and universities. The contest is happening only for the second time the first time having been last year. Among the contestants on Saturday, only KTTC and Kenya polytechnic had participated in last year’s event with KTTC being the defending champions. The two were hence placed at a higher level pool with the universities namely University of Nairobi and the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and technology. The second pool had 8 more teams all of them being technical training colleges (TTI) and contesting for the first time.

The contest required that the robot made by the students follow a line to a rack placed 7 meters away and filled with blue and red food blocks, select red blocks and drop them to the starting point that represented the community area. Marks were awarded for successful tracking/following the line, picking a food block, turning and dropping it at the community area. More marks were awarded for picking the red food block. Each robot was to do this for autonomously and take only three minutes. The theme being ‘Robotics for enhancing a healthy nation’, the contest rules were analogous to automating delivery of food from a central granary to the people (community).

The TTIs set of the competition. Three teams competed in every game and at the end, every team was to have played with the other at least twice. This category recorded very little success with only four out the eight teams being able to follow the line. Only two teams turned successfully upon reaching the rack and no team at all was able to pick a food block. At the end, Machakos Technical Training institute won in this category.

The second category was that of the universities and second time participants. Just before the games in this category, there was tension as some teams claimed the field track had been made to favor the host team. The issue was not resolved until the field track was modified to comply with the contest rules. On the start of the competition and KTTC proved to be in a class of their own and ready to defend their title. Their robot did not just satisfy the contest requirements but also entertained in the way that it did so. The contest room was full of cheers as the KTTC robot touched the blue foods and leaves them to search for only the red ones. The maximum number of food blocks that were to be picked was 3 in three minutes. The KTTC robot picked 3 in 3minutes and 22 seconds in their best round. The only other robot that was able to pick the food blocks was that of the University of Nairobi. UON’s robot was however not able to differentiate the food block colors and picked was also too slow, picking only two food blocks in 3 minutes in their best round. Kenya polytechnic’s robot managed to track the line and turn back but was unable to pick the food blocks while JKUATS robot only managed to track the line. At the end, KTTC emerged victorious scooping a record 712 points out of the possible 900, with UON coming in second with 632 points and Kenya polytechnic third with 405 points. The event organizers however said that all the participants in Saturdays contest would proceed to the Nationals.

The UON robotics team was so fascinated by the KTTC robot that they gave the KTTC team a standing ovation during the award giving ceremony. Bitter rivalry however ensued shortly after that with claims that the KTTC team had used a remote control to drive their robot. After a brief meeting however the UON programming team rubbished the claims. Thomas Gone a key member of the UON programming team said that looking at the KTTC robot move, one could easily visualize all code modules being executed and there wasn’t any possibility of a remote behind it. He said that the two major reasons his team lost was not including the color sensors and that their robot was meant for a curved line hence making it slow on a straight line. We need technology, and yet every new technology places new demands upon us and creates new forms of stress. We can't live with it, but we can't live without it. There is no turning back to some pre-technological Eden. Aristotle rightly described man as an animal that lives by technology. Growth of technology has far reaching effects on business in any given country and every business owner has a different opinion on how much new technology impacts on their company needs. On Tuesday the 4th of August 2009 starting 2.15 pm, Mr. Luke Ouko will give a public lecture on 'Technology and Business' at the University of Nairobi. Students and interested members of the public will assemble at the FabLab at 2.00 pm. Previously he studied Computer Science at Stanford University, Public Policy at Georgetown and Marketing at Nairobi University. Ouko's main research interests are in the areas of technology and it's impact on learning, innovation and development, the semantic web and cellular automata. Ouko is currently in charge of technology at an IT consulting company, Verve, where their main focus is providing information management solutions to local organizations. The company is also building a portal for grey (unpublished material) in the East African region.

In form of a website with technology news that will keep the users on track with the latest technological trends. All users of the site will be at liberty to post stories and comment on stories making headlines in technology. the site has three major pages of attraction i.e. Academics, The Club and Forums.

The Academics page will for the beginning stay locked to students and lecturers at the department of Electrical and Information Engineering at the University of Nairobi. On this page, students will find educational resources including free online books and lecture notes from their lecturers. Lecturers will be given exclusive permission by the site administrator to post material on this page. This page also has online simulation software to simulate Electronics circuit and view expected waveforms with so much ease. You do not have to worry about dead oscilloscopes in the laboratory any more. You do not even need archives to do your reports. In the comfort of your room, you will be able to simulate circuits, generate values and plot graphs all in 10 minutes. All you need is an Internet connection and log in to the academics page of our website. Plans are underway to open this page to other colleges and universities. This could however take some time.

The club section will be open to all users of the website. Besides highlighting various club activities the page has been designed to be a paradise for budding web applications and software developers. Upon the request and acceptance of the club's terms and conditions by the developers, their applications will be incorporated or showcased on the page. This is mainly to encourage development among students in particular and other users in general. To encourage application development, the simplicity of an application will not play part in deciding whether an application is featured or not. As a matter of fact application developers could be given limited administrative permission to do the uploads on their own.

The forums page is open to all users and will be a platform for discussion of various topical issues (Academic and General). While awaiting activation of their Academics pages, students from all other colleges and universities can use this page to interact and engage in technical discussions.

Besides these three, the site also has a Jobs\Internship page where Employers will post online, available job opportunities in their companies. Companies willing to partner with the club will have their advertisements run on the website.

The website is set to actualize online interaction among students, lecturers and professionals in the Information, Communication and Technology fields.

My best pick of what I sampled at KICC is as below

DIGITAL AGE INSTITUTE; Digital Age is a software development company that also offers training at diploma level of students in programming and software development. At the EXPO, they exhibited among others, the anti counterfeit software. The Anti-Counterfeit detector is a software that consumers can use to check whether products being purchased are counterfeits. In implementing this software, Digital Age will sell it to the manufacturers. The software works by remotely accessing the manufacturer's database via an APN number that would be provided by (read 'purchased from') a mobile phone operator. To check the product, the consumer simply sends a short message with the products serial number to a specified(by the manufacturer who in this case has purchased the software) APN number. If the serial number is available in the manufacturer's database then the consumer receives a message that the product is genuine. If the serial number is however not found then the consumer will receive a message informing him that the product is a counterfeit. On the manufacturer's side a log for all the serial numbers tested is created enabling the manufacturer to asses to what extend counterfeit products exist in the market. Among many questions that a willing purchaser of the software include; What if a counterfeit manufacturer bought one product and used the the product's serial number on all the counterfeits they produced?

For more information about Digital Age(The Company/Institute), go here>>

INTERSAT AFRICA; In partnership with Google, Intersat Africa have successfully researched and developed the Internet Kiosk product. Picture the kiosks you see around town, from which you often buy airtime. The Internet Kiosk is similar with a number of computers on it. It is a free standing/ lobby type kiosks. It’s durable construction, easy going design and expected high level performance in quality will be proved the selling features of the product. It can accommodate up to 5 users at one go. Made of high quality steel and weather proof keyboard and monitor the kiosk can be located anywhere one choses to work from. The kiosk has and works with a solar panel and a satellite dish at the top for provision of power and Internet connectivity respectively making it suitable for rural areas. Independent of the price of the solar panel and the satellite dish, Intersat are selling the kiosk at 450,000 Kenyan shillings. A personal observation, it is PEV(Post Election Violence) proof! Read more on Intersat Africa here>>

DIGITAL VILLAGES; Despite the slow progress that the PS in the ministry of information Dr. Bitange Ndemo has attributed to lack of funds, ICTvillage and Kenya Data Networks are not about to give up on the Digital Villages project. The project is meant to optimize Kenya's benefits of the availability of Internet connectivity that will be occasioned by the arrival of Fiber Optic cables in Kenya. It is also meant to bridge the Internet gap by providing access to Internet for the rural dwellers. Under the Digital villages project, KDN will offer Internet Connectivity and unlimited technical support at a cost of 58,000/= Kenyan shillings. This connectivity comes with free unlimited access to local content i.e. all sites hosted in the country will be accessed free of charge, the reason I'll drop the freebie blogger, register a domain name and host my site at home. More details about ICTvillages here

And just to sum up, the SEACOM secretariat was present and upbeat about the arrival of the fiber cable to the African Coast line. Read more here>>

And I'm really hoping this is no obsession.

Well straight to the point, my facebook activity is headed for a sharp decrease. This is because of the new social network created by KDN on the butterfly portal and tailor made for the U.O.N Community. I have no development details as of the moment but the product looks pretty much like a replica of FB. Talk of local content and application development, why use FB when we have an exact local product, maybe even better(even though I agree with one of the users that it needs a bit of pimping).

It comes with the usual Apps; Groups, Blogs, Chat ... bla! Bla! Just like FB, one can make friendship requests that have to be approved. There is a message app, via it you can send and receive messages. Of particular interest to me tho' and I suppose to many others will be Jobs, and U.O.N. TV applications. While unsure of the content to be aired on the TV, I suppose the jobs section will be a platform for companies to list job opportunities and students to upload their C.V.s. Isn't this cool?

Well the social network is young and thus far I suppose in about one month it has 168 members. I just joined. There is an option to invite your friends once you have joined plus always feel free to add me as a friend. All you need is a working e-mail address.

In a previous post, I gave an example of local content and application in the butterfly portal. The Internet is quite broad though and capable of revolutionizing beyond data. Video and voice also take up a big share of the revolution.

Well, I write rejoicing that my favorite radio station is now on-line. This simply means that Frequency limitations can not deny me a chance to listen to Vero all week days between 1 and 4 pm regardless of my location anywhere in the world. All I need is the time, the laptop or a PC and an Internet connection.

Internet radio, also known as streaming radio, is an audio broadcasting service transmitted via the Internet. Broadcasting on the Internet is usually referred to as web-casting since it is not transmitted broadly through wireless means. Internet radio involves a streaming medium that presents listeners with a continuous "stream" of audio over which they have no control, much like traditional broadcast media; in this respect, it is distinct from "on-demand" file serving. Many Internet radio "stations" are associated with a corresponding traditional (or "terrestrial") radio station. There could however also be Internet-only radio stations.

Internet radio has no geographic limitations, so a broadcaster in Nairobi can be heard in Laval France on the Internet. The potential for Internet radio is as vast as cyberspace itself.

In comparison to traditional radio, Internet radio is not limited to audio. An Internet radio broadcast can be accompanied by photos or graphics, text and links, as well as interactivity, such as message boards and chat rooms. This advancement allows a listener to do more than listen. The relationship between advertisers and consumers becomes more interactive and intimate on Internet radio broadcasts. This expanded media capability could also be used in other ways. For example, with Internet radio, you could conduct training or education and provide links to documents and payment options. You could also have interactivity with the trainer or educator and other information on the Internet radio broadcast site.

While for the most part Internet radio is a great service, it does have some disadvantages including sound quality, shoddy connections or software and the inability for dial up Internet users to access certain stations. While the majority of Internet radio stations provide near CD quality, some Internet radio stations stream a lower quality sound due to bandwidth limits. The higher the sound quality, the more data is necessary to produce high quality sound. The higher the quality, the more data you must send, for Internet radio stations looking to save on bandwidth costs, these stations usually send a lower quality signal. While most Internet radio stations can stream programming to users with only a dial up connection, you will usually need a broadband Internet connection to receive high quality transmissions.

My personal favorite stations include capital fm and mulembe fm. Other kenyan fm stations online can be found here.

It is feared that the cable's arrival could provide more opportunities to foreign companies and individual as compared to the locals. As simple as it may sound, it lead to a whole restructuring of the journal layout and earned its position immediately after the Editor in Chief. The statement plainly says that Kenya suffers from a poor reading culture. At higher levels (ages) this situation is a stampede to a smooth flow of information through print media. While the importance of information flow is probably a whole topic better reserved for another session, it remains a fact that for better flow of information, a reading culture has to be natured and maintained.
Poor reading habits are picked up in early childhood, more specifically in primary schools, depending on policies put in place by people who shape lives of children (Teachers and parents). As a small boy, the only time I got to open my books was either when I was doing my homework or when I’m with a teacher in class. This was the same scenario for most of my colleagues throughout primary school life. This happened despite the fact that a well natured reading culture would improve academic standards of the individuals in question.

Read on, Promoting a culture of reading in Kenya

THE OPEN LIBRARY()

INTRODUCTION
The open library project is an initiative to nature and maintain a reading culture. The major target group, at the beginning, is the primary school going pupils. The initiative plans to bring on board existing libraries within the larger Butere (Butere, khwisero, matungu and Mumias constituencies) as the resource centers and the primary schools in the region as the outlets. Under this initiative, schools are to obtain free of charge reading materials from the said libraries, distribute them to their pupils for a designated period of time and bring them back to pick another bunch of books and reading materials. An expansion to this program would be inclusion of secondary schools and the general public. Besides nurturing the reading culture, this initiative will aim at raising the academic standard in the region of coverage. In its implementation, the project will count on support and sponsorship from allied organizations and all likeminded and interested individuals.

OBJECTIVES
Nature and foster a strong reading culture
Raise the academic standards in the regions of coverage
Improve flow of information

WORKABILITY
This is an initiative that will depend on all the stake holders to play their part effectively in order for it to succeed. The various stakeholders will be as listed below:-

THE LIBRARIES
To reduce the cost of operation, libraries that accept to participate will take on part of the duties of the would be secretariat of the initiative. The library management will receive books and reading materials from all sources. They would then be responsible to moderate distribution to assigned schools (each participating library will be assigned schools with which it will work). Records of resource distribution will be well kept for monitoring purposes.

THE SCHOOLS
They play the crucial roles of interfacing the pupils and the library/initiative. The person in charge of the program in each school as may be picked upon by the school itself shall make sure that the resources obtained from the library are handled with utmost care.
The schools are crucial in the actual implementation of the project. Suggestively on a rotational basis, the concerned individuals in the schools must ensure that obtained books are read averagely by at least all the pupils in the selected group as may be decided by the school in consultation with the library/secretariat.
Schools are also to submit, periodically, their own assessment reports on the impact of the initiative relative to the objectives defined.

SPONSORS AND INTERESTED INDIVIDUALS
This group will be greatly counted upon if the project is to register success more especially in terms of coverage area. Among others, the main duties of this group will be as listed.
Donate books and other reading resources such as magazines and journals to identified libraries and or centers.
Reach out or suggest libraries or academic centers that would be suitable in implementation of this project.
Inform schools within the defined region about the initiative and encourage them to take part.

TESTING
The elementary way of testing the impact of the project is introducing a writing competition within the participating schools.

CONCLUSION
A theory goes that at class 8, many pupils in the rural areas are still unable to read and communicate effectively in English. English is hence the mostly affected of the two examinable languages. Unfortunately, save for Kiswahili itself, all the other subjects are examined in English. Obviously, this tells of what a tough job, a science or any other subject teacher for that sake, has. If a strong reading culture is successfully put in place, albeit at primary level, the academic standards will improve while the workload on teachers will be scaled down. I extend a passionate plea to anyone who gets to read this to put forth their best foot and make this happen.
Imagine a society with over ten thousand people with only 10 to 20 who will love reading. Flow of information from print media to the ten thousands will depend on only the 20. “if you want to hide information from Kenyans, put it in print”

Look out for more posts on this project as it unfolds (i.e. information on signed up schools and libraries, contact info for the “virtual” secretariat)…
Initial enquiries can be directed to Samuel, edsamich@ymail.com, +254724517177.
S.M.E http://www.blogger.com/profile/05533086700805562987noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7421993508434247873.post-34798592192423680512009-06-13T22:26:00.000+03:002009-06-13T22:41:12.210+03:00THE STUDENT ENGINEER

The Student Engineer is a quarterly publication of the Engineering Students` Association(ESA) at the University of Nairobi's School of Engineering. Microsoft has unveiled a new search engine called ‘Bing’. Bing updates MSN and Microsoft hopes this will help it gain a bigger share of the search market that is dominated by Google. Well I haven’t been a user of MSN but I’m keenly observing this new development and will be trying it out for a substantial period of time. Initial comparisons with Google indicates that Microsoft still have a lot to do. I’m however particularly interested in what Bing will be offering in terms of blogging. Not that I plan to quit Blogger but variety is always good. Try out Bing here. Look out for more posts on this.
S.M.E http://www.blogger.com/profile/05533086700805562987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7421993508434247873.post-30689386334509049122009-05-19T18:03:00.000+03:002009-05-19T18:16:45.526+03:00CONSUMER EDUCATION - CCK
The communication commission of kenya’s mission statement is to facilitate access to communication services through enabling regulation and catalyze the country’s socio-economic development.
CCK has a mandate to protect the consumers of communication services in Kenya with respect to the prices charged for and regard to the quality and variety of the said services. are here with us once again and I can’t help but reflect on the gap between the expectations and service delivery of the gigantic student body. I feel as students we have failed to clean our mess, we have lost hope and we have given up. I’m writing particularly to protest the culture that has been developed amongst students with regards to SONU elections. As we complain of the political situation on the national platform, it is crucial that we look back to where these leaders are coming from. It is a miss guided thought that the future of this country lies in our hands if status quo is maintained on the manner we conduct our business at student level.

Like many others disturbed by the capacity of the authorities to conduct and oversee a smooth electioneering process (like it should be in an institution of higher learning education), I had decided not to take part in any way in this years SONU elections. I got a quick reminder though (and a brutal one for that matter) that by turning your back to the problem does not exempt you from suffering the consequences. So I’m part of this EIC (Electronics and ICT Club) group that is hosting CCK for a public lecture in campus, we spend some 6000 on publicizing the event but oh no! What a bad timing. Our posters and banners are occupying crucial space for campaign posters. Ok! How is this; banners are only allowed at the main gate after obtaining an authorization from the campus care taker. We get our written authorization on Friday afternoon. We hand it to the security guard (we thought it wouldn’t be necessary but he demanded for it and a friend had to go pick it from his room at the hostels) Then we erect our banner. Tuesday morning and our banner is missing and in its place is a SONU aspirant’s campaign banner. Well the guard(who was still keeping our letter) explained that our banner had been destroyed at night by goons. Well paid campaign goons of course… Nothing much I could do.

Back to SONU, our country is acutely suffering from lack of sound leadership. The supposed people’s voices have turned out to be daytime robbers as corruption entrenches in virtually all the public offices in the country. A view of how SONU carries out its business and believe me the future is dim. The interesting part is that you are given a chance to show what you would do as a future leader and you do exactly that! Show what you would do… but this is only as far as the aspirants and finally the successful candidates go. There is the other group (should I call us the subjects) that will vote for him because he has bought beer (I don’t do alcohol except on very special occasions but beer here could be anything from mrats, keg… and all that other stf!) with this kind of decision making though, we can not bare expectations for the people we put in office other than to recover the cash they used to buy beer, with enormous interests of course. You must have realized by now that I’m squarely placing the blame on no one in particular but we the students. So on one side if any one reading this gets their way to SONU, strive at leaving a legacy and I’ll be watching, we will be watching! And on the other side when you smile over that generous launch offer, a glass of keg or even a handout, we can even make it legal as opposed to a norm but put in mind that you are taking a loan that will be repaid with above 100% interest rate. The money swindled to re-stabilize a successful aspirant’s financial status could have been a bursary, could have equipped your laboratory or even fund your internship program. Be the change you want! And yes, I will be voting for my preferred candidates on Friday the 22nd of may.

If you may want to read more on SONU, click here.
